The Scribe Tile and Sprite Collection is a bunch of animated character sprites and tiles that I made in the summer of 2005. They’re visually inspired by classic pixel art in general, and specifically, the art styles of EarthBound and Chrono Trigger.

I originally made them because I was trying to produce a video game using the Sphere RPG engine. These tiles are still plenty useful, I think, for any sort of old-school game. My goal had been to make all-original tiles, which as you can imagine was terribly time-consuming. I managed to teach myself about image editing and pixel art composition in the process, as well as simple sprite animation.
When I gave up on making my game (which went by the title “Scribe”), I decided that instead of letting my work vanish into an unmarked Recycle Bin, I would throw it into the internets for anybody to use for any purpose.
What’s in the collection:
- Animated character spritesets, with six frames per direction (kind of an odd number, I know). The character sprites are 24×32 pixels.
- Vehicle sprites. Several different car and truck designs, and a yellow school bus.
- Ground textures (in gif format) inspired by the game StarTropics.
- Three tilesets titled “Indoors”, “Structures” and “Terrain”. The tiles are 16×16.
- Many non-character sprites, such as doors, tables, and household and outdoor objects.
I’m distributing these images under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License. Have fun. If they’re useful to you, let me know.
